Properly fasting is not prayer, but the two activities often go together. Fasting is the abstaining from what would normally be good for a period of time. It generally focuses on food but can be done with (or without) other things.

One may think that the hunger of fasting would be a distraction, but the reverse is true. The persistent feeling of lack reminds the person fasting to concentrate on prayer.
