Oakwood's new pastor comes not from a Presbyterian background but from a Baptist upbringing and as a result brings a convert's appreciation of the Reformed Tradition.

Jon Green was born in Fort Worth while his father was there in seminary. When he was about five, his parents became missionaries with the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. The family went to Costa Rica the first year so that the parents could study Spanish and then went to Paraguay to work there as evangelists for a decade. They moved to Argentina for one year before Jon returned to Texas in 1970 to attend the University of Houston. After graduating from Houston Baptist University in 1976, he began Master of Divinity studies at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. Graduating in 1980 Jon then spent a year considering doctoral work before being called to Park Memorial Baptist Church in Houston Texas. While pastor there for thirteen years, he earned a Doctor of Ministries degree from SWBTS.

Dr. Green realized that he was more at home in our denomination, the Presbyterian Church in America, and in 1994 was called to be the pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Harlingen, Texas. The church prospered for the five-year term that he was there.

In November of 1999 Jon saw an opportunity to use his education by becoming the Headmaster of Spring Cypress Schools in Spring, Texas. While there he was appointed to a delegation from the South Texas Presbytery to visit a church in San Antonio that had been without a pastor for nearly a year. In that meeting Jon realized he is a pastor more than an educator and submitted his name as a candidate for the pulpit. In September of 2000 Oakwood Community Church accepted the application and called Jon Green as its pastor.

Jon met Carolyn in 1972 while attending the University of Houston and they married in June of 1973. She is the oldest of three daughters of a PCA elder. Their daughter, Rachel, was born in October of 1976, their son, Ben, was born in January 1979. Carolyn has a BA in Mathematics and a PhD in Business from U. of H. Rachel has a BA in History from Texas A&M (1997) and Ben hopes to graduate from A&M in 2002 with a BBA.
